Yatabe RS – Bringing a Manga Legend into the Metal
From the pages of the 1970s Japanese manga “Circuit no Ōkami” sprang the legendary Yatabe RS—a fictional racing machine driven by Fubuki Yūya, inspired by the “Dino Racing Special.” Though it never existed in real life, Nautilus Sports Cars and founder Mr Furukawa have gone to extraordinary lengths to make this dream tangible.
Under the meticulous supervision of manga author Ikesawa Satōshi, a rough FRP mock-up—borrowed from a 1/24 Nitto plastic kit—was first crafted. From that, a 1/6 clay model emerged, ultimately yielding a full-scale 1/1 aluminium hand‑formed body. The process was akin to that used in a mainstream manufacturer’s prototype workshop.
Despite its fictional origin, this Yatabe RS was conceived with real-world functionality in mind. A tubular steel chassis supports the body, and beneath it sits a genuine Ferrari Mondial 3.2 L V8 engine (not the hotter 308), front windscreens are made of real glass, and even road‑legal features like lights and indicators were included.
This one-off machine didn’t just stay in the workshop. It underwent two testing sessions at Fuji Speedway, and was even gentled around FISCO. Ikesawa himself took the wheel during these shakedowns, fine‑tuning the suspension and verifying that it could indeed corner like the car of memory .
What began as an illustration became a real, breathing vehicle—a living tribute to the dreams of Fubuki Yūya and the children who saw their own imagination riding that cornering titan. With its gleaming aluminium skin and Ferrari heart, this Yatabe RS captivates all who encounter it.
ヤタベRS ― 漫画から現実へと走り出した伝説
1970年代の人気漫画『サーキットの狼』に登場し、風見ユウヤの愛車として読者の記憶に深く刻まれたヤタベRS。その車は、あくまでフィクションの存在でありながら、少年たちの心に確かな憧れと衝撃を残しました。
その夢を現実に変えたのが、ノーチラススポーツカーズ創業者の古川です。漫画原作者の池沢さとし氏の監修のもと、1/24スケールのプラモデル（ニットー）をもとにFRP製のモックアップを製作。その後、1/6スケールのクレイモデルを経て、ついにフルスケールのアルミボディを手作業で成形。かつて漫画の中だけに存在したスーパーカーが、現実の姿を持つに至りました。
この一台は、フェラーリ・モンディアル 3.2L V8エンジンを搭載し、パイプフレーム構造のシャシー、実車用ガラス、保安部品まで備えた走行可能な実車として誕生。富士スピードウェイでのテスト走行も複数回行われ、池沢氏自らがステアリングを握る姿も見られました。
フィクションから生まれたとしても、本物のサーキットを走ることで魂を得た。
